We are fast approaching Christmas, and with it the half way mark in our course. If you haven't already, it is time to focus on what lies ahead and consider the envelope you will be opening in August with your grades on it. What do you want them to be? After all, it is YOU who makes the grade, the exam board simply give you the opportunity to achieve it.

Please ensure you are aware of all stereotypes and generalisations as these impact hugely on media language choices.
You can use the web to help you research and understand stereotypes.
E.g. The fact that 'Shameless' was set in Manchester is important as Manchester has stereotypes attached to it. You need to be fully aware of a range of stereotypes as producers use these in their media texts often.

Cross Media Study (Text 2)

What is it: you need to write an essay to show knowledge and understanding by analysing media products and processes to show how meanings and responses are created.

Homework – please write detailed answers to the following questions. Due in on Thursday 20th March.

1.     What is the institutional source of the text?
2.    In what ways has the text been influenced or shaped by the institution that produced it?
3.    Is the source a public service or commercial institution? What difference does this make to the text?
4.    How has the text been distributed?
5.    Consider how any of the following factors might affect the production and distribution processes of your chosen case study:
·         Media ownership – level of independence or convergence
·         Cross-media presence
·         Public service and other obligations
·         Censorship and control
·         The technologies used
·         How, where and to whom the products are transmitted
·         Scheduling
·         The role of advertising or sponsorship
6.    Who is the primary audience?
7.    Is there a secondary audience?
8.    How, when and where is the text consumed by audiences?
9.    How does the audience respond to the text? What elements of the text appeal to the audience (narrative, themes, values, uses and gratifications)?
10. Description: C:\Users\grahamr\AppData\Local\Microsoft\Windows\Temporary Internet Files\Content.IE5\O44AC15I\MC900088864[1].wmfWhat are the differences in the type of audience and the conditions of reception across the media?
